Homeowners considering updating their bathroom suites may be interested to hear that the current fashion is for minimalism and simplicity. Many people are looking to introduce a spa-esque atmosphere in these living spaces and minimalism helps provide a tranquil feel. Natural materials such as travertine and slate, accented with metal mosaics and glass, are proving popular at the moment, with the latter adding visual interest to an otherwise subtle colour palette.

Claw-foot baths, frameless showers, antique touches and relaxing paint shades are among the biggest trends for bathrooms this year. When designing your new bathroom look at pictures on websites and decor magazines and clip them to ensure the spa ideal is not strayed away from.

Homeowner’s intent on creating a spa-like, tranquil atmosphere in their bathrooms may want to look to interior designer Kelly Hoppen’s home for inspiration. The Toronto Star’s Colin and Justin – the one-time presenters of UK-based Channel Five’s How Not To Decorate – paid the stylist’s South Kensington house a visit and found her bathroom suite to be just that. In fact, it was the one room in the house that really ensnared the pair’s attention, with its “pristine white walls” and a black, wooden inset that carved a “dramatic pathway through the white flooring to the bath”.

This was raised on a shallow platform, while black plantation shutters delivered further design connectivity. As the two observed, “this bold statement provides a visual link to the band on the floor”. Ms Hoppen herself explained she takes inspiration from wherever she goes and everything she sees, such as the colour of a sunset or an architectural skyline.
